Dr. George Hess is an educator, guitarist, composer, and author. An award-winning teacher, he has taught music technology for over 25 years and has presented clinics and workshops throughout the world. The author of Creating Music with Notion (Hal Leonard, 2015), he is currently music technology editor for MusicEducation UK and is a regular contributor to School Band and Orchestra magazine Hess has produced over 100 tutorial videos on music software and his videos are featured on Groove 3 and the MuseScore website.
George is a charter member of the international faculty for Flipped Learning Global Initiative and is an Apple Distinguished Educator. His project-based music technology curriculum, “Singing the Blues,” led to his receiving the Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology at the International Conference on College Teaching and Learning in 2004. He has designed and programmed music education software for theory and ear training and multimedia projects for the U.S. Parks Department. His current research interests include music pedagogy including flipped, project-based learning, and online learning.
As a professional guitarist, George has performed extensively throughout the United States and Asia with such artists as James Morrison, Bob Mintzer, David Liebman, Wycliffe Gordon, Jim Nabors, the Osmonds, Ryo Kawasaki and Myron Floren. His compositions and arrangements have been performed by numerous schools ensembles and have been featured at a number of music education conferences.
Dr. Hess is currently associate professor of music technology at Sunway University in Malaysia. Previously, he was on faculties of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory, National University of Singapore, Central Michigan University, Alabama State University and the University of Northern Colorado.
